Unique buildings that are affordable, ecological, and quickly supplied are still very much high in demand. This leaves facade engineers under a lot of pressure to strike a balance between a number of conflicting considerations, including the need to design more quickly, limiting execution costs, work with complex facade panel and systems, and forecast how each tiny detail will affect the project as a whole.
Unlike traditional design, generative design combines parametric design and artificial intelligence together with the restrictions and data included by the designer. According to Celestino Soddu, a researcher at the Politecnico di Milano, it is a morphogenetic process that uses structured algorithms like non-linear systems to obtain unique and unrepeatable results, executed by an idea code, as in nature.
