Abstract

Nations face a complex challenge in the current era of competing priorities in striking the right balance of social investment as well as investment in new more affordable and capable defense platforms versus maintaining and sustaining existing defense assets.

One of the most encouraging potential solutions is the concept of employing a data-driven platform to reverse-engineer ageing defense assets and create a virtual twin. In France, the 3DEXPERIENCE® platform and a virtual twin are the centerpiece of a 10-year maintenance agreement signed in May 2019 with the Aviation Maintenance Division of the French Ministry of Armed Forces.

The virtual-twin approach to improving mission readiness is smart sustainment or support, and may be the most cost-efficient way for any country to maintain their major defense systems so they can improve and achieve the highest mission capability for both older assets and newer defense systems long term
